Who Should You Bring to Your Bridal Appointment?
/You’ve booked your bridal appointment, you’re officially going wedding dress shopping…and now comes another decision: Who should you bring with you?
Your mom? Your sister? Your future mother-in-law? Your entire bridal party?
After more than two decades of helping brides find their wedding dresses at Lily Saratoga, we’ve learned that who you bring to your appointment can have a bigger impact on the experience than you might expect.
Our best advice? Bring the people who make you feel the most like you.
Choose Your Most Supportive Crew
Wedding dress shopping is exciting, but it can also feel vulnerable and at times, overwhelming. This is not necessarily the time to bring your most brutally honest friend.
Instead, think about the people who make you feel confident, beautiful and supported. The best guests know how to give an opinion without taking over the appointment. They’ll tell you what they think when you ask, but they’ll also pay attention to your reaction to a dress.
Your bridal appointment should ultimately be about what you love.
Bring the People Who Matter to Your Decision
Support is important, but there’s another question we encourage brides to consider: Whose opinion actually matters to you when it comes time to say yes?
If you know you would never make the final decision without your mom seeing the dress, bring her. If your sister is the person whose opinion you trust more than anyone else’s, she should have a seat. If your best friend understands your style immediately and can tell from your face when you love something, count her in.
You don’t need to invite someone simply because you feel like you’re supposed to.
Think less about creating the perfect bridal shopping entourage and more about surrounding yourself with the few people you genuinely want beside you when you find your dress.
Why We Limit Our Appointments to the Bride + 4 Guests
At Lily Saratoga, our standard bridal appointments are limited to the bride plus four guests.
Part of the reason is practical: Lily is located inside a beautiful Historic Victorian in downtown Saratoga Springs. It's one of the things that makes our boutique so special, but it also means our appointment spaces are intimate and seating is limited. Keeping groups smaller allows everyone to be comfortable and gives each bride the experience and attention she deserves.
But there’s another reason—and it comes from experience.
Before COVID, we didn't have a firm guest limit. We had appointments with eight, ten or even more guests squeezed into one space. And while we're sure there are brides out there who thrive with ten different opinions coming at them, we've found that most don't.
Sometimes the more people you bring, the harder it becomes to hear your own voice. One person loves lace. Someone else hates lace. Mom wants classic. Your maid of honor wants you in something sexy. Your sister saw a completely different dress on Pinterest. Suddenly everyone is talking, and the bride who walked in excited about finding her dress is trying to figure out how to make ten other people happy.
Four guests still gives you a wonderful little crew to celebrate with while keeping the focus where it belongs: on you.
But What If I Really Want to Bring Everyone?
We completely understand that sometimes a larger group really is important.
Maybe you have a big family. Maybe your bridesmaids are your closest friends and you can't imagine finding your dress without them there. Or maybe gathering everyone together and making a big celebration out of the experience is exactly what you've always pictured.
That's why we offer Private Bridal Appointments for brides who would like to bring more than four guests.
Private appointments allow you to rent the adjacent appointment space in the back of our shop, giving your group more room while still preserving the intimate shopping experience we are known for.
Our 90-minute Private Appointments include:
Space for the bride + up to 10 guests total
A complimentary bottle of La Marca Prosecco
A $300 private appointment fee, with $150 applied toward your purchase
Availability Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m.–3 p.m., as well as Fridays and Saturdays at 5 p.m.
Private Appointment availability is dependent upon staffing, so we recommend reaching out in advance if this is something you're interested in.
Your Bridal Appointment, Your People
What matters most when selecting your “Couch VIPs” is how those people make you feel. Choose the people who will celebrate you, support you and help you feel confident in your decision—not the people you feel obligated to invite. Because when you finally put on the dress, the most important voice in the room should still be yours.
